In keeping with being the allergy capital of the world, we also seem to have more than our fair share of people with food sensitivities and IBS.
The first question – what is IBS? Well IBS is simply a ‘diagnosis via exclusion’, in other words, it is known what it is NOT, but not much more. It's a combination of symptoms that is recognised, but no one really knows what the real problem is.
Our approach is to start at the start of the digestive tract and then move down. Firstly, we need to make sure there is sufficient stomach acid to be able to digest the food. One complementary doctor declared that they thought about 90% of acid lowering medication prescriptions were unnecessary and that the patient actually needed MORE stomach acid, as the signs of low acid are the same as for high acid. Over the years, I can honestly say, I can only recall 1 patient who truly had too much stomach acid, the rest did not. The drugs commonly used to lower stomach acid ( therefore causing a rise in pH ) are known as Proton Pump Inhibitors and H2 blockers, and these drugs are recommended for no more than 3 x 14 day periods a year. I have never seen these drugs used for this short a period, and in the longer run, they actually alter the way your stomach wants to make acid, leading to problems when you try to stop.
When we move from the stomach into the small intestine, we need a changed environment to ensure the absorption of nutrients. It is in this area that a lot of bloating and gurgling goes on and this is often due to food only being partially digested in the stomach or the consumption of foods that your body does not like. Commonly, this bloating is accompanied with gurgling and gas. Fortunately we can use our locally developed herbal blend called RD Gas for fast relief and even prevention. We also utilise sensitivity testing to find out exactly just what foods you should be eating and build a diet based on your ideal foods.
The last section of the small intestine – just before it joins the large intestine and close to the appendix can be a place of disharmony as bacteria that should live in the large intestine can migrate into the small intestine resulting in dysbiosis. Dysbiosis can be a cause of discomfort and given our non-optimal flora in this area, can be a hiding place for undesirable bacteria and parasites.
The last part of the journey is the large intestine – commonly just known as the colon. Minimal absorption of nutrients occurs here, but water is re-absorbed and waste is concentrated in preparation to be expelled. When things go astray in this area, one of the most noticeable signs is diarrhoea, the water reabsorption ‘switch’ turns off as the body rushes to expel what it sees as irritating and foreign instead of making the ideal ‘sausage’ type of stool.
In any of these areas there is the potential for undesirable bacteria, yeasts or parasites. These may have come after a bout of food poisoning and you have ‘never been right since’ There are also nasties like Blastocyst Homminus or Dientamoeba Fragilis that just seem to be everywhere and medicine does not know for sure how they transmit. Even yeast infections can be the cause as yeasts displace the good gut flora and can cause bloating, food cravings and other digestive issues. Fortunately, we have programs that have eliminated all of these intruders 100% of the time.
No matter where the problem is, we know that it is not fun to know where all the toilets and bathrooms are whenever you are out – just in case – and will work with you to bring quality of life back to you.
